From Humboldt to Humboldt: Guest Curator m.p. Warming

Rotunda

Inspired by the living Giants, hollowed out by fire and growing strong, I bring remnants of an exhibition that first set sail on the AVONTUUR cargo schooner—en route from Germany to Colombia in 2025.

Because of my failings, the ship could not dock in Colombia as planned. This is how Alexander von Humboldt’s ammonites arrive in Humboldt County, a joyous pivot from a failed attempt. And in this magnificent place, I collect my thoughts and strength to continue our journey for nature kind.

Since this project’s inception, the exhibition aimed to create a bridge between Western and Indigenous knowledge for biodiversity recovery. The bridge is shown here with films from my fellow environmental artists, whose art originally voyaged aboard.

The exhibit, in its entirety, sailed on the schooner (shipped with zero carbon) from Germany to the Caribbean and back again. The art is currently stored in our Captain's warehouse, awaiting the next chance.

We artists—like von Humboldt himself and like many who dwell in Humboldt County—are always en route—or waiting for the next great adventure. I have not given up on our exhibit for Santa Marta. And as the Redwoods attest, time will tell.
