I photograph the twenty-first century cultural landscape and am most influenced by the photographers associated with the New Topographics of the 1970's. In addition to my own landscape photography, I am self-employed as Meridian Fine Art (est. in 1996) where I provide photography and digital print services for the art and craft community.

The conceptual nature of my landscape work is focused on how people influence the natural landscape and how this reflects cultural values and expression. In this regard, I not only document the scene as it appears at the time of being there but I aim to capture the feeling of its place.
Subject matter runs a range from ancient and disappearing alterations associated with cultures prior to Euro-American settlement to contemporary North American development and decay. This can included prehistoric ruins and petroglyphs, modern subdivisions, water and electrical delivery systems, mining, industrial and military environments, popular roadside attractions and outsider expressions associated with graffiti and vandalism.

I have always been intrigued by various types of light and how we use them. I was curious how visible light was transformed when projected through a prism or crystal. When I started taking photos I wanted to manipulate what the eye could see so the effect in my pictures is prismatic, and by trial and error, I succeeded. The process I use is diffraction. The whole technique produces photos I and hopefully you, see as paintings (trompe-l'oeil).

Diffraction is the manipulation of parallel lines on a grating tool, an optical component which fools the camera's eye, creating a unique image. This occurs in the field (en plein air) as I'm taking my photographs. Each signed piece of art is a monoprint.

My art gives me "the armor to survive the reality of everyday life". It involves me almost daily in the intricacy of nature while allowing me to spend time hiking and taking photographs.

My art is how I found my current joy.
There are no time limits to your dreams.

I am a full-time travel photographer based in Arcata, a small coastal town in the redwoods of northern California. My goal is to make artistic images of exotic locations that stir wanderlust or provide escape. I strive to make the photographs so realistic and compelling that you can imagine yourself in that spot, watching and listening as the day passes. You can be there whenever you choose to, through photographs on your walls. You will get a sense of the culture and spirit of the people who love that place. Landscapes and architecture have equal emphasis. I also have a professional background in science and map-making so location and detail are very important. I focus on a sense of place.I am a member of the Humboldt Arts Council and the Redwood Art Association where I exhibit regularly and have received awards in juried exhibitions. I was very fortunate to have my photographs selected as Best of Show at the Bend (Oregon) Summerfest in 2010 (>150 artists). I have had numerous solo exhibitions. My wife and I have met many kind people in our travels. I try to give you views from the perspective of a visitor who enjoys new places and new people, and who respects the culture and traditions of his hosts. These photographs are glimpses of some of the things that I have learned while traveling. And learning is an important part of traveling. I work to portray our shared humanity and shared values. You will see extreme mountain landscapes, iconic city views, famous landmarks, tiny villages, quiet countrysides, and ancient architecture. I have a full service online gallery at:

It would make me very proud to have a photograph on your wall. I hope that one day you find one of my photographs that will help you remember a favorite place, or provide a pleasurable escape that stimulates your imagination. A lot of planning and long days in the field go into each photograph. The next time you come across one of my photographs in an exhibition, please pause for a moment or two and let your imagination take you there. It would be fulfilling for me to find you standing there smiling!

We live in an extraordinary environment, one which begs us to advance the visual expression that it already provides for free; one which asks us to be a part of the collective interpretation.

My own contribution starts with outdoor photography but without restriction to landscapes.I search for personality in objects, buildings and scenes and enjoy especially those that present an unusual viewpoint.  When able to capture the moment and work toward a finished product I’m most satisfied when I witness the past intertwining with the present. I respect tradition but occasionally I will extend my images with digital brushes.  It adds some fun and a signature to my art.  Please enjoy additional works at my website link above.

Thank You- Jon Exley

I currently donate my photography to Food for People for their newsletter and also donate the cover image for their gift cards: Christmas, Mother’s Day. I photograph for them special events like the Cowboy Convoy Food Drive. Annually I receive a press pass and follow and photograph the kinetics and For the Glory which can be viewed at KHUM. I make posters for participants of the kinetic race. I participate in alternative galleries to take art to businesses.Artist Statement: I love photography and, through this media, exploring new connections with all aspects of life on this planet. I was born on the island of Adak in Alaska and love Alaska’s wild beauty, which I visit often, to photograph. I am an avid traveler and have combined it with photography all of my adult life. I enjoy hiking and am in a hiking group that hikes weekly, taking me to new areas to explore and photograph. I am a long-time Humboldt County, CA resident and love the diversity of beauty in Humboldt. Where else can you live in a temperate climate, where there are redwoods, dunes, bays, lagoons, wildlife refuges, sloughs, wetlands and miles and miles of unspoiled beaches and rivers? Along with this amazing landscape comes a diversity of animals that are always fun to capture in an image. I am interested in keeping up with the latest technology in photography by reading, and taking workshops and classes. I am a student forever in this changing world. I strive to capture, in my photography, my love of this amazing planet and share it with you.
