About the Artist:

In 2002 after ending a 21 year career as lead designer for the San Francisco Bay Area sticker company, Mrs. Grossman’s Paper Company, Susanna Snodgrass uncovered a new voice as a painter.  Predominantly self-taught, with no formal training as a designer or as a painter, her work, acrylic paint on paper and her recent work on Tyvek, is a result of an intuitive way of painting that at times is also a meditation practice.

The artist finds from her home on the Humboldt North Coast of California, an endless transmission of natural beauty, quietude, and teachings that shapes and sustains her work.

Artist Statement:

My work is a practice that leads into the inner experience. It is a movement searching out balance and stillness, a harmony of co existing energies.

I bring to this practice a curiosity about the existence of the Natural world and a deepening self inquiry; a life experience.

Visually I am influenced by the colors and light of the living environment, by the simplicity and directness of Asian brush painting, and by imagery of poetry.

My teachers are everywhere.

Kozo, the bark of a Japanese mulberry tree, is the main substance of my mixed media sculptures and installations.  I connect to its ancientness; the knowledge that for thousands of years something has been made so simply, has had such an impact on the world and overlaps so many cultures.  Journeys around the world, viewing nature and various cultures, watching life happen has informed most of the work:  A fence gets woven, a dwelling is latched together, a roof thatched, a basket made, cheese dried, a cocoon spun, a pod split open, a leaf curls.  There is a simplicity yet incredible sophistication integral to these everyday activities.  The work and installations have addressed these issues of humans and their environments. The environments have ranged from primitive villages and ancient landscapes to redwood forests. It has been my intention to exaggerate the spaces and to create possibilities where one can scrutinize and enter into or be reminded of the small pieces that are often forgotten or ignored.

BiographyExploring the Iowa countryside in his youth, Shawn established his connection with nature and his curiosity to see more. He now feeds his curiosity exploring the beaches and mountains near his Northern California home. The local landscape and wildlife provide abundant inspiration and reference material for his work.

Shawn began his career in art as an illustrator, creating award winning science and natural history illustrations for clients like National Geographic, the Smithsonian Institute, and Audubon. He also illustrated two children's books. After about ten years, he was able to turn his attention full time to creating his own paintings.

Often, personal experience is the inspiration for Shawn's artwork. Many ideas for his paintings originate during trips into the wilderness he loves. Combining his experience and observations in nature with personal interpretation and creative expression, the paintings share a glimpse of Shawn's unique vision of the world around us. In the end, however, viewers will have their own experience with the imagery and their own response to it. Hopefully it will resonate with them in some way.

Shawn's work has received national recognition in Western Art Collector, American Artist, and Wildlife Art Magazines. His paintings have been exhibited in the Arts for the Parks Top 100, Birds in Art, Society of Animal Artists' Small Works - Big Impressions and Art of the Animal exhibitions, American Art in Miniature, and the Bennington Center for the Arts' Art of the Animal Kingdom. He was awarded First Place in the Humboldt Arts Council's Celebration of the Arts 2009 Juried Competition and Exhibition, Award of Excellence for the NatureWorks Art Show and Sale 2008, First Place at Small Works - Big Impressions 2007, and Best of Show in the 2007 Redwood Art Association Spring Exhibition.

After moving to Humboldt County I took classes with local artists from whom I still find inspiration. I exhibit my watercolors with two other artists; we're billed as Artists3. Recently, I was honored with awards at the Humboldt County Fair in Ferndale, CA and received special recognition from Humboldt Arts Council, and Redwood Art Association.

My 35-year career span moved from aerospace as a draftsman/technical illustrator to private industry as a computer graphics illustrator. Many projects included producing illustrated parts breakdowns (IPBs) of portions of the Northrop F-5 and Douglas DC-9 for publication, layout and design of schematic/logic drawings for printed-circuit boards, and cartography for the Oceanics Division. As a computer graphics illustrator in commercial business I enjoyed working on a wide variety of artwork including sales and marketing presentations, marketing brochures for the company products, and in-house publications.

People are fascinating.  Seeing a man in deep thought hunched over a cup of coffee at a restaurant counter, or a girl riding a mechanical bull at a honky-tonk bar, these are the subjects that send me sprinting to my easel. My goal in painting is to take a  simple piece of white paper and, with mere paint and brushes, convey  the feeling and atmosphere of something I have experienced or imagined.  Before retiring to Eureka,  I worked for the Walt Disney Co. in the Figure Finishing Department, working on props and animated figures for Disneyland and Walt Disney World.   I painted everything from life-sized alligators, giant dancing flowers, Seven Dwarfs and Jiminy Crickets, to swashbuckling pirates.  You had to be able to do other things too, besides wield a brush.  Whether sewing sequins on gowns for dancing vegetables or feathering chickens for the Pirates of the Caribbean, I never knew what my next assignment would be.  One time, alone in a large dark sound stage, painting in blacklight on the animation figure of a Roman Emperor, an audio-animator sneaked in and turned it on.  I'm glad I wasn't on a ladder. Now I enjoy creating art pieces in my serene studio where nothing moves, except my brush and my imagination.

I am a full-time travel photographer based in Arcata, a small coastal town in the redwoods of northern California. My goal is to make artistic images of exotic locations that stir wanderlust or provide escape. I strive to make the photographs so realistic and compelling that you can imagine yourself in that spot, watching and listening as the day passes. You can be there whenever you choose to, through photographs on your walls. You will get a sense of the culture and spirit of the people who love that place. Landscapes and architecture have equal emphasis. I also have a professional background in science and map-making so location and detail are very important. I focus on a sense of place.I am a member of the Humboldt Arts Council and the Redwood Art Association where I exhibit regularly and have received awards in juried exhibitions. I was very fortunate to have my photographs selected as Best of Show at the Bend (Oregon) Summerfest in 2010 (>150 artists). I have had numerous solo exhibitions. My wife and I have met many kind people in our travels. I try to give you views from the perspective of a visitor who enjoys new places and new people, and who respects the culture and traditions of his hosts. These photographs are glimpses of some of the things that I have learned while traveling. And learning is an important part of traveling. I work to portray our shared humanity and shared values. You will see extreme mountain landscapes, iconic city views, famous landmarks, tiny villages, quiet countrysides, and ancient architecture.I have a full service online gallery at: http://davidhowell.imagekind.comYou can learn more about my photography at my website: http://www.earthmapphoto.comI also have a *Travel Photography Blog*. This is for your entertainment and travel escape. It is not primarily about me. It is about the photographs, with brief stories about the places, the people, or the experiences of making the featured photographs: http://www.earthmapphoto.com/blogYou can find out about my activities at my facebook Artist page: David Howell Travel Photography and Map Services - Earth Map PhotoIt would make me very proud to have a photograph on your wall. I hope that one day you find one of my photographs that will help you remember a favorite place, or provide a pleasurable escape that stimulates your imagination. A lot of planning and long days in the field go into each photograph. The next time you come across one of my photographs in an exhibition, please pause for a moment or two and let your imagination take you there. It would be fulfilling for me to find you standing there smiling!

After retirement I settled in Humboldt County and decided to pursue my long-time interest in art.

I took several classes with local watercolor artists/instructors and discovered the beauty and challenges of watercolor. I've been in Alan Sanborn's art critique group for several years. We meet every other week and under Alan's expert guidance review one another's work. This keeps me motivated to paint every day.

My paintings have been in juried shows where I have received several awards and ribbons including the prestigious "People's Choice" award at the Humboldt County Fair.

As a member of Artists3 my fellow artists and I enjoy exhibiting our watercolors throughout the county. I am also a member of; Humboldt Arts Council, Redwood Art Association, and Fortuna Art Council.

Currently exhibiting at Piante Gallery, Eureka CAthrough July 28, 2012Born and raised in California. I currently reside in northwest California. I am self-taught; fashion illustration in the early years and presently; oil painting. My subject matter ranges from figurative, scapes, portraiture to abstracts.Composition, shape, texture and color are important components in my work. I paint impasto, using painting knives almost exclusively. Impasto style suggests instead of describes, allowing room for interpretation; thus a more inclusive experience for the viewer.CollectionsCristina Bauss / David BerginPiercy, CAEric Furman / Aline FabenFortuna, CAJennifer GloverEureka, CAHolly GlavichEureka, CABeth 'fama' LauerMad River, CADr. Thomas MaysEureka, CAPam and Manuel ParsonsGarberville, CADiane WestonSan Francisco, CAKit SumersFlagstaff, AZKevin and Sara WalkerEureka, CACarla YvonneRedway, CAWayne and Toni FarrarEureka, CAFor additional work and current | future exhibitions, visit:georgialongoils.com georgialongoils.blogspot.com

Like many artists, I consider myself a visual storyteller. On one hand, I love capturing moments, expressions, and subtle gestures through figurative realism, while on the other hand I am inspired by the feelings and interpretations that can be created through color, texture, and abstraction. My work is thus both illustration as well as a window into the subconscious, and as I evolve as an artist, these two ideas seem to be converging more and more.

My passion stems from a constant desire to improve my technique while making sure to balance this with a healthy sense of experimentation and discovery. This inevitably results in a studio art practice that is both challenging and inspiring.

I received my Bachelor of Arts Degree with concentrations in Studio Art and Art Education, a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Art, and an MA in Education from Humboldt State University. I currently teach art and ceramics at Saint Bernard's Academy and serve on the Board of Directors for the Humboldt Arts Council. My work has been exhibited throughout Humboldt County and is in many private collections.

What happens when a bookworm turns artist? Still life paintings become stories and the mundane is sprinkled with fancy.I grew up devouring fairytales and historical novels and public television. Long ago and far away were part of daily imagination for me. As an adult, I now see how the unchanging truths of humanity were captured in those stories. Long ago is not so far away as we might think. That consciousness and youthful wonder still color my life and artwork today.Whether still life, portrait, or landscape, my work is inspired by a sense of "Otherness." I used to think of "Other" as something removed from our world, but now, I think of it as the quality uniting us across time and space. We may describe it as "Other" but it is simply deeper than the mundane, the trivial, the passing. "Other" is instead Universal and Constant, our reflection of the Divine and our longing for the Eternal. It is those fragments of beauty in a broken world..For more about my development as an artist, visit my main website, or subscribe on Facebook to catch my latest work as it comes off the easel!

Art has been Orr Marshall's passion since childhood, through early schooling and at Yale University where he majored in art as an undergraduate and continued in graduate art school, studying with Josef Albers. He was a student assistant teacher of drawing and design at Yale School of Art and Architecture, and has taught at California College of the Arts in the San Francisco area, at College of the Redwoods in Eureka and in Humboldt State University extension classes.. Between teaching stints he spent five years in Japan with a Japanese government scholarship to study at the National University of Fine Arts in Tokyo. His work is in collections throughout the U.S. and in Japan, and has been exhibited in museum shows, including a large retrospective at the Morris Graves Museum, Eureka, December 2006 ~ February 2007. His painting Graffiti Girl was included in an exhibition at the newly rebuilt M.H. de Young Museum in San Francisco, October~November 2005. Ideas for his work come from many sources: imagination, dreams, everyday surroundings, his earlier artwork, or any combination of the above. He develops an image through a series of sketches, studies, even small paintings, to prepare for the final work. His interest in experimentation has led to a variety of approaches, based in representation but ranging from real to almost surreal, incorporating methods such as painting in dots or in squares, drawing with black and white patterns, or combining visual images with verbal elements.A dominant influence has been his study of languages and cultures, particularly Japanese language and calligraphy. When dealing with Japanese subject matter he likes to contrast the modern and traditional aspects of culture as they coexist in contemporary Japan. The range of his work in various media, and the development of ideas from first sketches to finished works, can be seen at his website, listed above. Here are direct links to larger images of the works in the gallery at right --Graffiti GirlManga Fan: Sonya-MandalaCustoms of the Boss Lady, ContinuedSayoko and the Magic UmbrellaThe AudienceStudio PortraitGarden Party with GuestRozodaliskX & YLittle Me

In the style of Abstract Expressionism

the spontaneity of the artist's approach to his work draws from

and releases the creativity of his unconscious mind!

“Hello All My Friends: My name is Reuben Mayes. I am 32 years old and I live in McKinleyville. I am an artist and my style is named Abstract Expressionism. I feel excited and happy and proud and silly and crazy when I am painting.”

 -Reuben T. Mayes, Artist

Reuben uses acrylic on canvas because it dries faster than oils and acrylic is easy for him to apply with his high-energy brush strokes on any size canvas, representative of Abstract Expressionism, a painting style in which an artist applies paint rapidly and with force onto a small to huge canvas in an effort to show feelings and emotions, painting gestural, non-geometrically, sometimes applying paint with large brushes, sometimes dripping or even throwing it onto canvas. Abstract Expressionism is characterized by a strong dependence on what appears to be accident and chance but which may be highly planned. Sometimes an Abstract Expressionist is concerned with adopting a peaceful and mystical approach to a purely abstract image. Usually there is no effort to represent subject matter. All of Reuben’s work is abstract and expressive with the spontaneity of Reuben’s approach to his work drawing from and releasing the creativity of his unconscious mind. The expressive method of his painting is considered as important as the painting itself. Reuben insists on painting in his work boots so he named his website "art in my work boots". World-famous Abstract Expressionist Artist Jackson Pollack also insisted on wearing heavy leather boots when he painted commenting it made him feel grounded and connected to the earth.

Kim Reid's lifetime interest in art began in childhood, then on to university studying fine art, art history and design.  Many years were invested in a large aircraft company as technical illustrator and graphic designer.

Her ever-expanding repertoire of watercolor paintings and limited edition prints are displayed in many local galleries and venues in Humboldt, the most popular collection being the redwood forests of the Pacific Northwest and Lost Coast. (KimARTandDesign.com)  She is working on a series of portraits of the most iconic ancient redwoods, for example: Luna, The Corkscrew Tree, Giant Tree, Big Tree and Big Red.  She wants to extend her gallery reach into Mendocino County.  Other works by Kim include euro castle history (CastleColors.com), ancestral villages and California Missions (MissionPaintings.com). Larger viewing of these portfolio images are available on these gallery websites. Capturing nature in landscapes and history has inspired all her painting collections. She is very glad to be showing and selling her work through Humboldt Artists Gallery in the Morris Graves Museum of Art.

Kim has a new series of art that is being shown/sold in the gallery. Its laser inscribed burl wood, done from her scanned line drawing of "Tall Tree" Sequoia Semperviren.

I consider myself primarily a watercolorist that finds inspiration in the beauty of my natural surroundings and the ordinary in life. For me, creativity is  an ongoing process, an "active" meditation and practice.

Since 1994 I have worked as a Teaching Artist (and now credentialed art teacher) in many public schools and art organizations (like the Humboldt Arts Council and the Ink People). I taught museum art classes and summer art camps for children at the Morris Graves Museum of Art for 7 years. During the summer, I facilitate painting retreats and offer adults watercolor workshops at the Morris Graves Foundation in Loleta.

A complete resume of my exhibition history and teaching experience is available upon request. My paintings can be viewed at my studio by appointment only. For more information about my artwork and classes, contact me at: arupasart1@gmail.com .

I am a landscape painter in the minimalist tradition. My primary focus is with nature's color, my response and maturation of that color.  How I best convey the emotional impression of a particular hue is through the awareness and susceptibility of light.  My work is contemplative and a tool for meditation.  I don't give all the answers.  I want the viewer to enter the work and stay a while and have their own journey.  All my work is oil paint on canvas and the sizes range from as small as 20" x 20" to multiple panels extending up to eight feetPlease visit my web site at tinarousselot.com where I have posted my most recent work.

I am a mosaic artist, teacher and owner of Laurel Skye Designs Studio in Arcata, California.  My daughter, Marley Goldman  and I, work together to create unique mosaics as well as teach eleven different workshops in methods and techniques that vary from basic to advanced.  We teach at my studio, Skyelab, in Arcata, as well as throughout the United States, Europe and Mexico.  Our store carries mosaic tiles and supplies and is open to anyone interested in exploring this very tactile medium.

I have been tiling for over thirty years, and doing mosaics for the last fourteen.  Marley has worked in mosaics since she was 11 (she is now 24), and studied with me at Luciana Notturni's Scuola Arte del Mosaico in Ravenna, Italy when she was just 16.  FW Publishers (North Light Books) recently published my book : Mosaic Renaissance/Reviving Classic Tile Art with Millefiori.  This is the first mosaic book to explore the use of Italian millefiori in mosaic art. I work and teach in a variety of materials, including glass, ceramic, broken dishes, beads, jewelry, findings, rocks, stones and 24K gold.  Our home is a mosaic showcase, housing over 200 mosaics, Skyelab and three rooms dedicated to  offering the largest selection of mosaic supplies on the West Coast.  We are open to the public for shopping, workshops or simply visiting and exploring our mosaic environment.

I have always been intrigued by various types of light and how we use them. I was curious how visible light was transformed when projected through a prism or crystal. When I started taking photos I wanted to manipulate what the eye could see so the effect in my pictures is prismatic, and by trial and error, I succeeded. The process I use is diffraction. The whole technique produces photos I and hopefully you, see as paintings (trompe-l'oeil).

Diffraction is the manipulation of parallel lines on a grating tool, an optical component which fools the camera's eye, creating a unique image. This occurs in the field (en plein air) as I'm taking my photographs. Each signed piece of art is a monoprint.

My art gives me "the armor to survive the reality of everyday life". It involves me almost daily in the intricacy of nature while allowing me to spend time hiking and taking photographs.

My art is how I found my current joy.
